Our radon testing

Campbell and Davies LLC is approved as a

radon/emissions laboratory by the

NYS Dept of Health Environmental Lab Approval Program

(ELAP)  lab ID 11904.

Maintaining this status involves:

-Annual calibration of our 6 Sun Nuclear continuous radon monitors

-Reporting our results semi-annually to NYS according to their guidelines

-Performing an annual internal audit of methods, records and quality control

-Being audited every two years by the NYS Dept of Health

    -Paying the laboratory fee annually

We perform our short-term tests according to EPA guidelines, which require closed-house conditions.  This means all windows and crawl space openings  must be closed 12 hours before the test begins, and for a minimum of 48 hours during the test.  Regular heating and cooling equipment can be used, and normal coming and going is allowed.  We pick up the monitor at the end of the testing period and can get an immediate preliminary result (within .02 pCL/L).  After we analyze the machine data, we provide the final result in a report e-mailed (and snail-mailed) to our client. The report includes a summary, a graph showing the hourly readings collected, and a non-tamper form signed by the owner or resident of the tested property, declaring that the test conditions have been maintained.

The EPA has set 4.0 pCi/L (picocuries per liter of air) or higher as an “action level”, or the level at which further action should be taken.  They would prefer it to be 0.0 pCi/l, but this is not achievable given the methods of mitigation that are affordable and available.

Approximately 55% of our clients have a radon test done with a home inspection, and of these, approximately 22% are 4.0 pCi/L or higher. Approximately 4.7% of the tests are over 10 pCi/L, and 1.8% are over 20 pCi/L.

Radon tests performed with a home inspection are $100, without the inspection, $125.
